Are the Springs on Your Garage Door in Need of Repair? 3 Warning Signs You Should Not Ignore

Ruben Pena

One of the most important parts of your garage door system is the springs which run along each side of the door, as well as along the length of the door. The reason these springs are so important is that they help to support the weight of the door itself. Over time these springs will wear down. These springs can also suffer damage if your door is not properly maintained. When the time comes to replace these springs it is important that you act quickly since you will not be able to safely operate your garage door without them. Furthermore, it is possible for you or someone you care about to be injured if these springs were to release on their own. This is because the pressure behind these springs can cause them to become sharp projectiles if this pressure is not released properly. That is why it is so important that you do not ignore the following warning signs that your garage door springs are in need of repair.

One Side Moves Faster Than The Other

When you open your garage door, either manually or using an automatic opener, both sides of the door should move in sync. If one side of the door is moving faster than the other you will be able to visually see the difference as the door will be crooked during the opening process. This typically indicates a need for professional garage door repair services as it is the result of faulty or damaged springs along one side of the garage door. Since the springs on one side are damaged, it will be more difficult for these springs to effectively lift the weight of the door and ultimately result in a slower opening speed. If not repaired quickly, the spring will inevitably break and render the door unusable until the spring is replaced.

Squealing Sounds When Opening Or Closing

If the springs on your garage door are experiencing excess stress due to wear and tear or other damage, these springs will often become much louder when opening or closing your door. In many cases, this will result in a high-pitched squealing noise. If you find that your door is making this type of sound or any other sound that is not common for your door, it is best to call a repair contractor right away in order to prevent additional damage to your door which could be costly to repair.

Door Crashes Down When Closing

As with the other warning signs discussed above, this particular warning sign is the result of damaged springs struggling to hold the heavy weight of your garage door. If you find that your garage door is lowering much faster or virtually slamming to the ground when you close it, do not put off getting repairs. Instead, you should stop all use of the door and be sure to call a reputable garage door repair contractor in your area right away.
